Selecting the Right Type of Stairlift

In many homes in the United States and Europe, a staircase is used to help save space. These stairways are important for improving safety, but for seniors, they present a very big risk. This is because often, as the result of medical conditions, it is not possible for a senior to safely use the stairs, which is why stairs are the most common source of a falling accident among the elderly. There are a number of ways to help make the stairs safer for seniors, but stair lifts are often the most economical and practical option.

How Much Do Stair Lifts Cost?

One of the main factors that sets stair lifts apart from other staircase safety solutions, such as using an elevator or moving into a new home, is cost. On average, a stair lift costs around $1500, which is much less than an elevator or moving to a one story home would cost. Further, since for many a move to a new home means a move to a retirement home, or other assisted living facility, installing stair lift can often have the least impact on a seniors life, while still allowing them to safely get around their home.

In addition to having a lower cost for the actual stair lift, installing the lift can usually be done by the homeowner and does not require any major home renovation, such as would be required if an elevator were installed. Even if professional installation is required, however, stairlifts are almost always still going to be less expensive than an elevator.

While stair lifts usually cost around $1500, there are some that cost more and others that cost less. Outdoor stair lifts, which are resistant to water and other elements, are the most expensive, but can be used in almost any situation. Used stair lifts are also often available, but it is important to remember that they will usually have a much shorter warranty than a new stair lift does.

Choosing the Right Kind of Stair Lift

There are a number of different stair lift manufacturers and dealers, so it is a good idea to have an idea of both your price range and what type of stair lift you need before doing any shopping.

The two basic types of stair lifts are standing stair lifts, called perch lifts, and sitting stair lifts, called stair chairs. For most, the stair chair offers the safest option, as it provides a solid chair for the senior to sit in as they move up or down the stairway. However, for those who have had a knee surgery or if there is very limited space on the staircase, a perch lift might be a better choice.

Almost all stair lifts use a tracked system that is attached to the steps on the stairway. The chair or perch moves along the track, carrying the senior safely up the stairs. In areas of limited space, a track that attaches to the wall might be a better choice, but these are more expensive and usually require professional stairlift installers.

Curved stair lifts are also more expensive than straight stair lifts, requiring a custom built track and professional installation. However, there are several companies that offer stair lift kits designed for L shaped staircases and stairs that have landings, so an actual curved stair lift is not as common.

When selecting a stair lift, it is important to decide who will be installing the stairlift, as usually a do-it-yourself stair lift kit costs less than other types of stair lifts. Remember that just because you, the homeowner, may not be able to install the stair lift kit, they are very simple to install, so most handymen will be able to do it.

Also, keep in mind that while outdoor stair lifts can be used indoors, they are usually much more expensive, so in most cases should only be used outdoors.
